October 30th to 31st saw the first of the Viet Taff’s home Warhammer tournaments (we have previously done annual 40k events). Sixteen entrants (with 13 different armies!) from Nottingham, Derby, London, Newport, Cardiff and Bridgend made their way to Cardiff for the biggest prize in South Welsh fantasy wargaming!

We had a good mix of armies from the fluffy to the filthy (you know who you are!), from the old (come on Paul start painting again) to the new (Aargh! Slayers!). We had a good mix of players also, from grizzled and scarred tournament veterans to one who was at his first tournament.

A bit of a surprise in round 1 was the spanking given out to the gnarled Guy Palmer by the rakey youngster Matt Otter from the Dragon Slayers. The Viet Taff boys could only manage a miserable 2 wins out of 6 in round one! Round 2 saw Viet Taff veterans Guy Palmer and Paul Newman recover from their pathetic starts to bag good wins and saw Conrad Gonsalves Nurgle Daemons vomit their way to top spot by crushing Rhys Evans’ Tomb Kings. Round 3 was another leap forward for the Viet Taff as we won 4 out of 6 and Mark Mainwaring moved into top spot; the rest of our boys were languishing in mid-table mediocrity!

Conrad finished second overall

So, day one finished and time for beer! The Dragon Slayers, Viet Taff and Mr Gonsalves eventually met in the centre of Cardiff (Paul, I'm on Cathredral road how do I get to…?) and proceeded to drink lots and lots of beer (er, and cola Mr Mott!) and dance like w*nkers. Fortunately I have little recollection of actual events and am praying there is no photographic evidence! Who’s nipples were you sucking Paul? No, on second thoughts don’t tell me I don’t want to be sick! One unfortunate had the pleasure of staying at a certain Mr Evans house as he was off servicing a young lady. Armed with house keys, address and alarm code our intrepid drunkard made his way to his quarters and proceeded ably to enter the 4-digit number to ensure that the house alarm didn’t ruin the lives of the neighbours. I guess it must be an easy mistake to get an alarm code number wrong when you’re texting it to your pals phone but that didn’t go through our hero’s mind at 3 am! Thankfully it’s really easy to pass out when you’re pissed and tired and in a house when the alarm is blaring! Neighbours? Whatever!

Cardiff is one of the best cities in Britain for a night out and many were suffering from the effects on Sunday morning. Some spoke to God on the porcelain telephone and some of us just guzzled tea and water but the most alarming thing was the level of toxicity that men can produce on a Sunday morning after a night on the beer.

Highlight of Round 4 was Jon Bevan (High Elves) versus Rhys Jones (Tomb Kings) who are both from the Bridgend YMCA club. Rhys ALWAYS beats Jon but as I sneaked a look at the progress around turn 4, the High Elves were on their way to a massacre and Jon was finally on his way to a victory over Rhys. By the end, however, there was quite a turnaround as Rhys battled back to lose by a margin of 300 points when it looked like it was heading for an easy massacre. Still, it was a win for Jon over his club rival and gave him a chance to avoid the wooden spoon!

Round 5 and the deciding battle. Marks Khorne Daemons had the toughest of battles against the Slayers of Steve Smith, which ended in a draw. In fact round 5 was so tight that the only massacre was in the High Elf civil war between Lee Delaney and Jon Bevan (well done Lee – you had to win one!).

The Slayers scored over 600 vp’s due to Dwarves getting killed by things with Str 5 or more!!!

When the dust had settled we had a clear winner by a 9 point margin – Mark Mainwaring with a not too disgusting Khorne Daemon army. Conrad Gonsalves was second with Rob Lane just edging out club mate Matt Otter for third. Best Army winner was Steve Smith for his Slayers who narrowly beat Rob Lane and his Chaos Beastie army. The Most Sporting honour was deservedly taken by Rhys Evans who edged out Conrad Gonsalves.

Thanks to everyone for coming and making it a memorable event. We will soon have details of further tournaments in Cardiff and hope to announce a 60 player Cardiff Crusade in 2005.
